Cheruthrukku Temple popularly known as Cherumukku temple is dedicated to Lord Muruka in the form of a child. Lord Muruka is the pet son of Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathy. Lord Muruka’s Incarnation was to protect the world from the evils of Demon Taraka. As a child Muruka had the knowledge of Lord Dakshinamurthy and strength of Goddess Parvathy. Lord Brahma became a victim of his knowledge as when Muruka asked the meaning of Pranava Manthra and Brahma could not answer properly. |
At a very tender age task of Muruka was to kill Demon Taraka, For the proper fulfilment of the task Parvathy Devi blessed her son Muruka with a weapon “vel”. Vel came out to be the favourite weapon of siva’s son. The deity worshiped in this temple is “velmuruka “ Muruka with his vel. In the previous millennium cherumukku temple was a vedic centre. Brahmins who visited Koodalmanikyam temple visited here. Non- Keralite Brahmins, locally known as Pandi community, also worshiped lord Muruka. Lord Muruka as prime deity Ganesha and Hidumba are sub-deities here. |
